Addition to the Adult Writers' List

• Plays, The Drama Magazine for Young People has been published since 1940, and is, according to their website, the #1 source for plays for kids. Elizabeth Preston has been the editor for over 25 years. Their site says, "Plays is always in the market for exciting, interesting, well-written, and age appropriate material for lower, middle, and upper grade actors. We accept material on spec from first-timers as well as well-established professional authors with no promises that we'll be able to buy or use the submission in Plays." Full submission guidelines can be found at the bottom of this page.

Addition to the Young Writers' List

• Writing with Writers is a site maintained by Scholastic where kids "work with authors, editors, and illustrators in exclusive workshops designed to guide them in developing their skills." In my opinion, this is a fabulous opportunity for kids. The workshops are with people such as Jane Yolen and Jack Prelutsky, and writing choices include everything from poetry, myths, short fiction, humor, to memoirs, essays, and science. When kids have gone through a workshop and have a finished piece of writing, they can submit it for the possibility of having it published on the website.

Theme Lists Updates

Cadet Quest
Manuscripts for the 2015-2016 season must be submitted before the end of April to be considered.

Fun for Kidz, Boys' Quest, Hopscotch lists have a couple of new topics and maybe some old revived ones (?). They're only looking for nonfiction with photographs at this point.

SHINE brightly
First deadline is March 11, so don't delay if you're interested.

Sparkle
First deadline is March 11, so don't delay if you're interested.

Contest

Pockets Annual Fiction Contest will open March 15th. Deadline for submissions will be August 15th.

AppleSeeds Update

This news came from Marcia Lusted, Editor of AppleSeeds--"After the March 2015 issue, AppleSeeds will no longer be published as a regular, monthly serial magazine. Some of its content will be folded into its sister publication, Ask. The AppleSeeds brand will continue to be used for special projects, such as books or special stand-alone issues."

Xiaoduo Media Update

Xiaoduo Media is a Chinese publisher whose children's fiction magazine Red Squirrel and children's nonfiction magazine Ask You Ask Me have been on our list. They accept submissions in English and translate them into Chinese. Conny, Xiaoduo Editor, says that in 2015 they plan to combine their children's magazines into one, called Front Vision. Targeted age will be 9 to 12.

They will still need fiction stories, but they only buy all rights or exclusive reprint rights (for the already published ones). Exceptions could be made, but should be seldom.

They will need science writers, not only for the magazine, but also for book projects. They are also looking for writers with humane education knowledge. If you're interested in writing in either of these areas, do not submit a completed article. Instead, send Conny an email with a short intro about your educational background and writing credits. She will have a topic list for you to choose from.

Note: An interview done with Conny last April can be found on Chris Stevenson's blog.

This and That

• Sucker Literary submissions are currently closed and will reopen on March 16, 2015 for 24 hours ONLY.

• Story Shack Magazine is currently CLOSED to submission of short stories, but their site says, "We’re set to open again on April 1, 2015."

• Another Realm seems to have solved their website problem and is back up and running.

• Unsettling Wonder is currently closed to submissions.

• The teen ezine Parallel Ink is currently on hiatus while they revamp their website. They expect to be open again to submissions by March 14th.

• As of January, 2015, Daniel Resner is now Associate Editor for Spider and Muse magazines.

Discontinued

• Old Timey Hedgehog appears to have ceased publishing its magazine. The last issue was in the fall of 2013.

• Scapezine is being put on my discontinued list. Their site says they are on indefinite hiatus, but they have not published an issue since September 2012. If their hiatus ends, I will add them back to the list.
