Blaze Magazine

From the magazine website http://blazekids.com/about-2/:

"Now in its 9th year, Blaze combines the mix of entertainment and education that kids look for in magazines and websites. Kids want creativity and challenge, and they want to have fun. That's the Blaze difference … an interactive magazine that keeps the fun in horses and learning.

Blaze magazine is full of fun facts, cool games and crafts, and fascinating articles on horses, horse kids and the natural world they share. Promoting literacy of course, it's great for learning about not only horses, but also about nature, history, creative arts, character traits and much more.

Geared for kids aged 8 to 14, the magazine is published quarterly."

To submit: Send your article by email to Brenda McCarthy, Editor, at brenda@blazekids.com. She said they do not want stories or puzzles.

I discovered this magazine in author Nancy Allen's weekly blog market news. Thank you, Nancy.

New Pockets Themes

Pockets has recently posted some new themes for upcoming issues. Check them out here.

Update on Columbia Kids

Writer Doraine Bennett spoke last month with Stephanie Lile, Editor of Columbia Kids. According to Lile, Columbia Kids is "still planning to release the magazine on an issue by issue basis. They are writing grants and will plan to include Columbia Kids in some of those grants. She has all the content for issue 5.... at some point, issue 5 will appear on the website. After that, they will do a call for submissions based on grant money for another issue."

So, if you're interested in this publication, keep an eye out for a future call for submissions.

Thank you, Doraine. (Doraine's website)

Caution Regarding Canadian Magazines

Dan Risch, a successful children's magazine author, warns us that few non-Canadian writers make it into the pages of Canadian children's magazines. Apparently, Canadian magazines can get subsidies from the government, but one of the requirements is that most of their magazine space be reserved for Canadian authors.

So, if you're non-Canadian, you can submit to Canadian magazines if the guidelines don't say otherwise, but be aware that your chances of acceptance are slim.

Thank you, Dan, for this tip. (Dan's website)
